The Edna D. Leir "Gan Hashalom" Peace Kindergarten
Promoting peace from a tender age
Most children in Israel attend "gan," or kindergarten, at a very young age. Many start at the age of two. There is no better time to break down stereotypes than at this tender age. The Peace Kindergarten, located in the YMCA, aims to do just that. Two teachers, one Arab and one Jew, one speaking Arabic and one speaking Hebrew, care for about 120 children between the ages of 2 and 5. With the help of their talented teachers, children learn about their common interests, celebrate multicultural activities of the Jewish, Islamic and Christian faiths and move onto primary school knowing that our common interests unite us. Funding is needed for tuition subsidies and support staff.
