For several years the Tisch Zoo has been one of the most popular and most visited sites in the country – its unsurpassed location and beautifully designed animal exhibits attract thousands of people from all walks of life.  Following more than a decade of environmental research, planning and construction, the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens opened their gates to the public in March 1993. The overall environment at the Zoo was designed to be as natural as possible. The animal enclosures are a far cry from the old-fashioned bars and cages, and have been dug directly into the rock face of the hills. Animal magnetism, it seems, is universal, and attracts visitors from all walks of life, rich and poor, Jews and Arabs, Orthodox and secular.   Teddy Kollek understood that the Zoo has a clear social purpose and its success needs to be constantly built upon with new and innovative exhibits to continue to attract the entire mosaic of Jerusalem’s population and all of Israel to this oasis of coexistence. The staff continues to develop new and innovative exhibits and promote their mission of research and assistance in the field of animal preservation.
