Rehabilitation of Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The life of the hearing impaired in the modern world is a difficult one.  In addition to functioning in a hearing environment, the hearing impaired often find themselves running form institution to institution and office to office to get all of the services and rights to which they are entitled. 10% of the population is hearing impaired.  In the elderly this number goes up to one third.  The Jerusalem Foundation works to provide these people with the services they need and deserve.

Beit Zusman:  The Beit Zusman Center for the Hearing Impaired is a place that makes a measurable difference in the lives of hearing impaired Jerusalemites. It assists all ages and its staff is focused on meeting the needs of each individual member and is constantly learning about the hearing impaired world, through their members while trying to offer new opportunities and assistance based upon this acquired knowledge.

The Hattie Friedland School for the Deaf: The Hattie Freidland School for the Deaf is extraordinary because most of the students have other special needs as well and are unable to attend a regular framework. It accepts students from west and east Jerusalem as well as the surrounding rural communities. Students learn in their native tongue in order to provide the best learning experience and communicate with each other by using Israeli sign language. The school is staffed by Jewish and Arab teachers and its staff includes counselors, care-givers, assistants, national service volunteers, psychologists and speech therapists.

Micha - Association for the Rehabilitation of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Micha is an organization that provides assistance to the deaf and hearing impaired children from their diagnosis (sometimes as young as 3 months) through kindergarten. Micha accepts both Arabs and Jews to their program and is staffed by both Arab and Jewish teachers, clinicians, audiologists, and speech therapists. The goal is provide children, through age 4, all the tools they need to enter into a mainstream framework.
