Mautner Community Garden
“Building Community by Connecting Diverse Residents”

The Mautner Community Garden, located at Kiryat Menachem’s Ganim Community Center which services southwestern Jerusalem’s lower-income neighborhoods, is a unique venue which allows residents the opportunity to work the land in an urban landscape. The Garden is being constructed by the local residents in the style of a “Four Seasons Garden”, with designated planting plots for each of the 4 seasons. Continuing this hands-on community building approach, the Mautner Community Garden is in the final stages of completion.

2017 has so far been an extremely successful year for the Community Center’s popular activities at the Garden, where multi-generational environmental programming enriched the lives of residents from all the different backgrounds and socio-economic levels of the city.

The Ganim Community Center’s Senior Club hosts a group of elderly women who meet 3 times a week to enjoy social activities, including a mosaic making workshop where they create beautiful ceramic art pieces. The Community Center Director invited the women to join the community development occurring at the Mautner Community Garden, by making a mosaic sign as a group project. In this way, Senior Club members feel that they are doing their part to help with the physical building and gardening maintenance that the neighborhood’s residents have taken charge of themselves.

The Jerusalem Foundation is currently supporting the Mautner Community Garden’s final construction stages. The Garden will continue its mission to provide unique outdoors environmental education and social opportunities for the area’s residents, while providing the highest standards of care for its gorgeous flora. The Senior Club’s creative contribution to the Garden demonstrates the benefits of creating community by connecting Jerusalem’s diverse residents.
