Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and Jerusalem Foundation President Yohanna Arbib to Inaugurate New Senior Center in Gilo

Ceremony to Take Place This Coming Monday, July 13, at 5:00 pm, 1 Hatsabar Street, Gilo

The Gilo Senior Center in Gilo, intended to provide a response to neighborhood senior citizens, will be dedicated this coming Monday in a ceremony with the participation of many senior citizens and their families. The new center, built by the Jerusalem Foundation, was declared a "green" (environmentally sustainable and resource efficient) building by the Standards Institution of Israel, thus becoming one of the only public buildings in Jerusalem to achieve such recognition.

The center has two separate floors. The upper floor will serve as a day center for some 60 senior citizens in functional decline, offering them enrichment and therapy several hours a day, including a hot meal, social activity and paramedical services. Among other things, the upper floor includes a dining room, a fully equipped kitchen, a hairdresser, a computer lab, activity rooms, showers, a lounge and a meeting hall. The building's lower floor will serve as a social club for seniors. The club will host regular classes, lectures and enrichment activities.

The building's design features an intimate courtyard that enables access to and use of the facilities for all visitors. A community café planned for the courtyard will serve as a meeting place and allow seniors to enjoy the open, inviting space while drinking coffee at subsidized prices.

The building costs were funded in partnership by the Jerusalem Municipality, the Jerusalem Foundation, Israel's national lottery Mifal Hapayis, the National Insurance Institute, the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany and JDC-Eshel.

"The center will benefit all the senior Gilo residents, whether independent or in need of professional assistance of any kind", says Dr. Adit Dayan, the Jerusalem Foundation's Director of Projects in the Fields of Social Services and Community. " We believe that through this beautiful building, we will significantly contribute to the wellbeing of Gilo community members."
