Hanukkah in Jerusalem: 8 Activities for 8 Nights

 

Hannukkah is a wonderful time to enjoy Jerusalem’s cultural offerings – whether you’re looking for a unique gift idea, or simply for a way to celebrate Hanukkah that goes beyond candles and latkes, the city has a multitude of events to enhance your holiday. Here are some of our recommendations; all activities below involve institutions and projects supported by The Jerusalem Foundation:

 

1. Sunday December 6: Emma at Poetry Place - Emek Refaim 43a, 7:30 PM

Poetry Place is a school dedicated to continuing Jerusalem’s rich literary heritage. In addition to courses for the aspiring poet, it also offers events and lectures throughout the year. On the first night of Hanukkah, Poetry Place will host a free lecture by Shai Sendik about the beloved Jane Austen character, “Emma”, in honor of Sendik’s new translation of Austen’s novel of the same name.

 

2. Monday, December 7: Opening Event for the Jewish Film Festival – Jerusalem on the Screen – The Jerusalem Cinematheque, 7:30 PM

This special event celebrating 50 years of the Jerusalem Foundation will include historic film footage of Jerusalem, and a panel of leading film experts will discuss Jerusalem in Israeli and international cinema, including a special lecture on the role of the Western Wall in Israeli film.

3. Tuesday, December 8: Amphibian by Machol Shalem Dance House – Tahana Rishona, 10:30 AM

This performance, geared for those in the 7-10 age range, combines multimedia effects and dance to tell the story of a journey into the complicated world of modern technology. It will be accompanied by a children’s movement workshop starting at 11:20 AM.

 

Entrance fee: 40 NIS for the performance; 15 NIS for the workshop. Parents accompanied by 2 children: 25 NIS. Children below age 2: Free.

 4. Wednesday, December 9: Happy Purim – The Jerusalem Cinematheque, 9:30 PM

This movie provides an up-close, inside look at the role that Purim plays inside  the Ultra-Orthodox community. It will be screened as part of the Jewish Film Festival.

5.  Thursday, December 10: Hannukkah Blues Festival - Ronnie Peterson and Efraim Shamir – The Yellow Submarine, 9:30 PM

Part of the Blues Festival hosted by the Yellow Submarine, this performance unites two renowned virtuosos of the Israeli music scene for an evening of musical collaboration, and lots of acoustic guitar.

 6.  Friday, December 11: Story Bird - The Train Theater, 11 AM

This interactive children’s play and the accompanying workshop, based on the tale of a teacher who can talk to birds, is a delight for the entire family. Recommended for audiences aged 4 and up.

Because of the Hamshushalayim festival, there’s a special ticket price of I5 NIS.

7. Saturday, December  12: Night Spectacular – Tower of David, 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM

What better way to celebrate the Festival of Lights than with a light show? This unique celebration of light and sound uses trompe l’oeil technology to transform the stones of the museum’s medieval citadel into a work of art. The museum will be holding two Saturday night showings.

 

Ticket prices vary from 30-55 NIS based on age and can be purchased here.

8. Sunday, December 13: Se Questo E Un Uomo – The Khan Theater,  8:30 PM

This play, based on Holocaust survivor Primo Levi’s recollections of his experience in Auschwitz, is a meditation on human nature during some of history’s darkest moments.
