What’s Brewing in Jerusalem?

Jerusalem may be known for its history and ancient biblical stories, but 2017 in Jerusalem has so much more up its sleeves. The city is quickly becoming a central hub for young startups, entrepreneurs, and unique cultural events. This June, there’s something happening around every corner, and here’s what’s happening this week.

 

Where Tech Meet Design

 

This Sunday, on June 11th, the Start-Up Nation Central will be hosting an event along with tech startups Siftech and Toolbox, called Where Tech Meets Design - Why Design Matters for Startups. The event is part of a Jerusalem based program Where Tech Meets Design, whichraises awareness of design as a catalyst for economic growth. Key speakers will include Gary Levitt, founder of MadMimi and Yalabot, on humanizing technology for the new age, and Ayelet Batist, founder and manager of Lightricks and designer of Enlight and Facetune, on the role of cultural research in app development.

What’s Brewing in Israeli Society?

 

Also on June 11th, join Beer Bazaar in the Machane Yehuda Shuk for lectures by Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel, which will host leaders in the field of Israeli social entrepreneurship. On the event docket will be Yanki Margolit, a social entrepreneur and tech investor, who will talk about the future of jobs in a technological society. Next, former PM advisor, spokesperson and Taub Center board member Miri Eisin will speak about being an Anglo-Israeli in Israel society. Last but not least, Gilad Brand, Taub Center researcher, will talk about the cost of living in Israeli society, and whether the price of living is in line with earnings. F-Up Nights in Jerusalem, Volume 12

 

F-Up Nights is a global project that takes place in over 200 cities around the world. Each event brings together entrepreneurs, artists, professionals, and more for a night of inspirational speakers. The even brings together successful leaders in their field to talk about their biggest failures, and how they went on to achieve success. On Monday June 12th, F-Up Night in Jerusalem will bring in singer and producer Adi Olmansky, CEO of Selffit Exercise Cards Intl Robby Berman, Business Developer of EquityX Tut Shani, and artist Amir Lustig at the JBG Club.

International Book Fair 2017

 

Started in 1963, Jerusalem’s International Book Fair brings together publishers, authors, editors, agents, and book lovers to exchange ideas and broaden their horizons. The Fair makes it possible for international publishing to promote Israeli literature, and for Israeli culture to get a taste from fresh literature around the world.

 

The event opens on June 11th with a special ceremony, awarding the Jerusalem Prize to Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgard, followed by an opening party at the First Station with spoken word and a DJ. Programs will continue through June 15th, and include exhibitions of new titles from popular publishing houses, readings of newly translated works from French, Russian, and Japanese literature, discussions with Israeli and American poets, and much more. The First Station and Mishkenot Sha’ananim will be bustling with the fair, and offer many exciting lectures, sales, book signings, and conferences open to the public.

 

Special lectures and writing workshops include: Jerusalem Syndrome: Writing About Jerusalem and Staying Sane, Not Line Dancing: New Women Find Different Ways to Tell Old Stories, Belonging and Alienation: On Family, History, and Literary Representation, and Publishing in the Digital Age.
