Chummus and Lectures: A Jerusalem Weekend


This weekend in Jerusalem, the city will be a host to a variety of amazing lectures, concerts, conferences, and and...International Chummus Day. Read below for the full list of exciting events throughout the city.

This Friday, May 19th, One Day, a social volunteer organization l, will be bring young Jerusalemites together for a day of community gardening. Volunteers lend a hand in the community garden in Katamonim, learning to tend, plant, and care for the garden while getting to know their neighbors. The event will  culminate in sharing a hard earned meal.

Next up on Friday, Rasha Nahas and Band will be performing live on the rooftop at the Al Ma’Amal Foundation for Contemporary Art. The poetic soft-rock band with songwriter and lead singer Rasha Nahas will sing favorites such as
The Skies Don’t Care, and The Fall, from their debut EP “Am I”.

Friday night in the First Station, The World Union of Progressive Judaism will bring together rabbis and laypeople from around the world for a special Kabbalat Shabbat in Jerusalem. Together with the Reform Movement of Israel, Ginot Ha’Ir Community Council, The First Station, and Reform communities from around Jerusalem, the Shabbat prayers will be held and accompanied by an ensemble of instruments in the First Station’s public square.

At the beginning of the following week, Sunday May 21st, the Jerusalem Conference will take place at Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus Campus. The conference will deal with issues of globalization and recent world events that raise important questions about the fate of politics, economics, media, and moral issues. The event will include panels, roundtables, lectures, and surveys, and is open to all participants by registration.

Also on Sunday, Chummus Shel Tehina in Nachlaot will be celebrating International Chummus Day with free chummus served the whole day from their cozy venue. Each year, the exciting day brings together residents of Jerusalem to revel in their favorite food with their community and friends. Doors open at 12 in the afternoon and close at 7 PM.

On Sunday, Tmol Shilshom will host an encounter with author Yachil Tzaban about his book,Eretz Ochelet (roughly translated as A Country Eats), which will be discussed over the cafe’s own food and wine. Yachil Tzaban talks about the country’s obsession with food, chummus, and feeding their children. The book explores Israeli and Palestinian culture around food, history, and religion.

Last but not least, Beit Alliance in Jerusalem will be hosting a mindfulness workshop with Omri Comay. Participants will get the chance to learn about mindfullness through a philosophical and scientific lens in order to adapt the principles of mindfulness to their everyday lives. The event is free by registration for all that want to join.
